The Steelers are one of the most annoying franchises in sports. Your thoughts, Curt?

Annoying? I can see why someone who is all about doing as little as possible to do your job could say that.

The Steelers offer a hack like you no material without work right? You want grit, dirt, bad stuff, that's what you thrive on. You're mister 'anti' in every argument, right or not, for the sake of taking the other side.

You're Tony Kornheiser, NO WAIT! You're a younger version of Dan Shaughnessy! Ya! That's it!

You take whatever side will piss more people off, for the sake of being 'that guy' in every argument, facts or not.

How else can you rake someone over the coals in a book review, FOR A BOOK YOU NEVER READ????

The Steelers, annoying? What's the annoying part?

1) More Super Bowls than any franchise in NFL history?

2) Fewer head coches than most teams have in a decade, in their entire team history?

3) No drug scandals

4) No players that murdered someone in their family

5) Hall of Famer after Hall of Famer that were great guys. From Franco Harris, to Swann, Stallworth, Lambert, Ham, Blount to Bradshaw their franchise is littered with awesome players who were/are great people.

There's no scandal here, which sucks because it means hacks like you either write a 'feel good' piece, which is against your religion, or you dredge something up where there is nothing, which sucks even more since that takes work....

You're the most anti-athlete guy around, always scrambling to grab the banner for the least popular viewpoint and hoist it up for all to see, regardless of whether you're in the right or not.

So say it with me, the Steelers are the greatest franchise in NFL history, and with a super bowl win this year, will be crowned team of the decade for a second time!

Thoughts CHB Jr?

felger said the following @ 07/07/2009, 8:09pm

What's annoying about the Steelers? Hmm. Plenty of things. But I'll start with just one: their fans.

Dork! I used to wear authentic jerseys, Curt. Then I turned 12.

And are you serious about no drug scandals? Those Steeler reunion events keep getting smaller and smaller, don't they? Seems that the members of those 70's teams have about the same life expectancy as  Spinal Tap drummers. Since 2000, 34 former Steelers have died, 16 of whom were under the age of 59. According to the Associated Press, a Los Angeles Times survey in 2006 found that nearly one-fifth of the NFL players from the 1970s and 1980s who had died since 2000 were former Steelers.

``I can't explain it,'' longtime Steelers executive Joe Gordon told the AP. ``Maybe it was something in the water.''

Yeah, the water. That's it.

Those teams of the 70's (which we now know are suspect) created an obnoxious, over-confident fan base that endures to this day. And that, in turn, created a cocky, mouthy, over-confident that team that up until recently (unfortunately) was about the biggest gag artist in the league. I enjoy seeing the Steelers lose on the big stage more than just about any other team, and thank goodness I've had a lot of opportunity to do just that in my adult life. The 2004 AFC title game AT HOME. The 2002 AFC title game AT HOME. 1998 AFC title game AT HOME. The 1995 AFC title game AT HOME (to the Chargers!).

So now they're winning those games. Interesting. Must be the water.

Schilling said the following @ 07/07/2009, 8:55pm

Oh that's right, because you are beyond being a fan, you're too cool right? You're that guy who calls people that know how to use a computer, a geek, still.

Even though you're the dork that can't turn one on. You're the guy spewing the 'you're live in your mother's basement' to anyone that does anything not "hip", or "cool" in the Felger dictionary.

You're like guys I used to play with, who screamed at players that looked at the stats, or watched ESPN, screaming, "Who cares what your stats are, it's about the team!" only to find their lame asses in the bathroom behind the stall, with stacks of stats on the ground, reading up on all of it but making sure no one knew, tired.

I wear jerseys, TONS of them, and I could give a rats ass what 'cool guys' like you think. I'm me, for all the warts, and more than ok with it.

You however, are screaming to make a name for yourself, to anyone that will listen, about anything.

And that my friend, is why you hate the Steelers. You hate anything that is TOO successful. Rooting for anyone and everyone on the way up, as long as they don't stay there too long. You're the 'misery loves company' guy.

That 70s team is no more suspect than any other franchise in any other sport in any other decade since PED's came into play (whenever that was).

They created the same fan base that exists here now, a fan base that expected winning, no matter what, from every team (and rightfully so I might add) because the teams, the franchises went after it at all costs. Fans don't like to hear that 'at all costs', but that's exactly what it is. No one's in the cold when things like this come out from an organizational standpoint, people just choose to have limited insight or knowledge as appropriate.

Probably that same eyesight you had in the late 90's for Mac and Sammy, while they 'saved' baseball, only to turn on the poison pen in the past 9 years and be appalled at the lengths other people would go to do things in life.

No, you hate the Steelers for the same reason anyone hates anything that sustains success over a long period of time, jealousy....

felger said the following @ 07/07/2009, 9:22pm

I like the tough steroid talk, Curt. Sort of reminds me of your appearance in front of congress, when you were bold and honest and exposed baseball for the cesspit it had become.

Oh, wait.....I forgot.

Jealousy definitely wouldn't be the emotion I'd be reaching for to describe my feelings. When I'm around Steelers fans, I'm mostly just reaching for the disinfectant. I mean, really. Is there a more vulgar, unkept group of fans than your people? Actually, there are. I'd rank the Steelers fan as third lowest-form of human, right behind the Jets fan and any fan of any team from Philadelphia.

Oh wait....I forgot.

Schilling said the following @ 07/07/2009, 10:04pm

That's a good one, stupid and ignorant, but a good one. Unlike your profession where accountability is as common as Haley's Comet, and people can routinely lie, print total fabrications, character assassinate at will with little to no repercussion, when you're under oath in front of Congress using conjecture, insinuation, or anything other than fact can ruin lives.

I'm not up for that, unlike Jose who had intimate first hand knowledge, and really didn't care if peoples lives were ruined as long as there was personal gain in it, I had neither of those things. I had years of speculation, years of opinion on who might be and who might not be, but to this day I've never seen anyone inject or ingest steroids or HGH so standing in front of Congress wouldn't have been the time to 'guess' or throw out a name, because peoples lives were ruined that day and many days after.

Granted many of them were self imposed and deservedly so, but like so many dolts that do what you do, you don't really care for facts, you'll go with the story that has 'teeth' above facts and the truth.

Did I suspect? Yep. Did I think I had teammates that did? Yep. Should I have mentioned names in either case? While I know you'd have had no issue doing so, I couldn't and wouldn't.

So stow that 'turtle' BS.

Your last few lines are spoken in true Felger fashion. Hop on over to the 700 level in Philly and throw that out there, which would be akin to wearing a Yankees jersey near the Sox bullpen.

There'd be no shortage of folks that would likely take pleasure in beating the stuffing out of ya.

You won't get passionate, irate, devoted, loyal, obssessed fans without a few bad eggs, anywhere.

Steeler fans are no better or worse than any true sports cities fans that care and live for their teams.

Just admit it, it's jealousy. There, now you can sleep tonight. Once you admit the problem you're half way to curing the ill right?

felger said the following @ 07/07/2009, 10:34pm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you said during that congressional testimony that the steroid problem was no worse than the five percent that had tested positive in the anonymous round. You could have been a lot closer to the truth and still not named names.  Your comments to Sports Illustrated were obviously much more genuine (afraid to slap teammates in the ass? Nice!)

But, overall, I sense we have reached a stage where common ground is at least possible when it comes to the Steelers and their fans. Let's not be afraid to pat each other in the tush and bridge our differences, Curt. Something tells me you have it in you.

Schilling said the following @ 07/07/2009, 11:14pm

So you were the guy? You were the one that knew it was more than 5%? I didn't, I sure as hell didn't think it was what it's someday going to be revealed it was. No one did, no one had a clue. People had suspicions, but no one thought it was as rampant as it was, including the guys in the game not using, like me.

How could I have been "alot closer to the truth" and not named names? I would have had to know more, a lot more, than I or many others did right? Nah, that wasn't what people wanted, they wanted a lynching, regardless of fact right?

To understand how skewed the world was, and still is, Jose Canseco appears to be the only guy that showed up that hasn't been publicly crucified for what he said, and half of what he said was and still is speculation. He's stabbed in the dark a few times since then, and still hasn't missed. Sad.

Tush pat it is then, and we can agree that the Steelers are in fact the greatest franchise in NFL history....

Nice poster btw!

Oh I know, to gather info for next year right? Bullsh*t, they used it for "in game " purposes. Spygate runs a lot deeper than Pats fans want to admit. Love Curt Shilling and all he's done and his candor but he lost a lot of credibilty with me when he endorsed Donald Fehr's career last week. Only an ex-baseball player could be standing so close the forest would not be able to see the trees. Felger wins this one.

Curt is rarely happy with any sportscaster unless he is kissing his a s s anyway. I like both of these guys. They should square off more regularly for sure. ;-)

I'm from the Cape (love the Pats) but if you're talking best team ever don't you have to go with the team with the most rings? The Pats hold the record for the most dominant team of any era for sure! (3 rings & set the consective win streak twice, wow!) But the Pats still only have 3 rings... soon to be 4! Tom Terriffic is back and going to make Big Ben look like Ryan Leaf.

Curt you are confusing truth with telling people what they want to hear. As a former athlete you are used to having your ass kissed constantly. As soon as that stops you accuse the reporter of being a "hack". Sometimes the truth hurts Curt, and in this case you got your ass kicked, not kissed.

Without that call there very well may have never been a steeler dynasty. I also have a problem with Curt lumping all sportswriters the same way. What's next African Americans and fried chicken observations? There are alot of excellent sports reporters and let's not forget that Canseco knew and ratted out all of baseball. Everyone ignored him at the time but he is more right than Curt, Felger, the MLBPA, Fehr, Orza, and Selig.

A team doctor was released after it was determined he was involved in a human growth hormone scandal after the 2006 Superbowl. Strangely the Pittsburgh police didn't pursue it any further as it related to the Steelers. Pittsburgh police couldn't possibly be Steeler homers, could they? Steeler-Patriots Super Bowls
*6>3 or...better yet, 6=2x3
Pirates-Red Sox MLB champs (past 80 years)
*4>2 or...better yet, 4=2x2
Penguins-Bruins Stanley Cups (past 36 years)
*3>0 or..better yet, 3=..oops, doesnt work with 0.

While Red Sox were busy losing the 7th game of WS 3 times, Pittsburgh teams are 5-0 in 7th games to win championships (Pirates 4x, Pens once)

I know, you've got the Celtics, good thing. Pittsburgh's ABA team won that league's first championship, yes...in the 7th game.

Oh...far as gaggers, Felgy...your Patsies were victims of the biggest upset since SB III...lotta good 18-0 did them.

I cant believe I gave you this much.

Hey Brocktonboy, "lucky to beat the Cardinals in the S.B."? Are you serious? I seem to remember your beloved Patsies being thrashed and humiliated at home in Week 13 last year by none other than the eventual SB Champs! Did you conveniently forget about that one?
And swissvale72, I'm on your side, but did you really have to bring the Pirates into it? Not a real compelling argument when they seem to be on the way to setting the MLB record for most consecutive losing seasons.
swissvale72
posted @ 07/09/2009, 11:25pm

right...and as awful as the Pirates have been...17 consecutive losing seasons....historically, they still beat the sawks.
Steelers? Let's go old & new then. Yes...4 of the SBs were 30 years ago; but guess what? Two have been more recent then the last time the Patsies WON the big one.
Remember that laughable SI piece last year about Boston being City of Champions? Hahahahaha. Who knew that mantle would be earned by the City at the confluence.
Team of decade? Big deal!! Since when is that such a great designation. The greatest team in the history of the NFL, the Steelers of the '70s, belonged to us, Pittsburghers, and now we've added two more!! And in the year when the B's were perched to make a run for the Cup...who will be touring with Lord Stanley's trophy this summer?? Penguins!!

I live in CT, and it wasn't that long ago you could get a Pats ticket for < $10. The organization was begging for people to show up. Three Rivers and Heinz Field have been sold out for all of my lifetime, and continue to be sold out for the next 30 + years. You can't even begin to compare to two franchises with each other. Now baseball on the other hand...you have to give it to the Sox fans...well done...and that's coming from a Yankee fan...well done.

To atlstiller (Jerry's other kid?)I will admit you make a valid point. I do remember week 13. That was a thrashing. You're right on that one. But I also remember two AFC Chamionships and Joey Porter 'mouthing-off' during a regular season game after the Squealers beat the Pats. You are right. The Squealers are great against the Pats during the regular season. They just save their 'choking' whenever they face the Patriots with everything on the line in a Championship game. Oh how I love to see those Squealer fans gag and choke on their yellow rags when the games against the Pats really MATTER!!!!! I think we may get to see that a 3rd time.

How does Felger win when half his entries had nothing to do with the Steelers?

And the Steelers dying young thing is nonsense. NFL players in general die young. There have been a half dozen "Outside the Lines" pieces about it. It's not a Steeler specific problem.

All I have to say is that Pittsburgh is the best sports town in America. Its a blue collar town with blue collar players and workes. We also have the best owner in all of sportsAnd we dont pay outrageuos money to our players you have to want to be a steeler {ex. Hines Ward] could have gotten more money somewhere else but he is a Steeler for life. We may not win them all but we have won more. AN this last Super Bowl was not luck it was blood and guts that wonthat game. Go Steeler Nation. As far as Curt Shilling dont know alot about him except he was an exceptional pitcher and he can join Steel fans anytime with that performance he put on with blood running all over his foot> Well done Curt and Iif I had a vote you would make the Hall of Fame just on that performance itself

WEEI should just give the 2 of them their own show, maybe on the weekend, and get rid of that dope Mutnansky or whatever his name is...still cant believe Mustard and Johnson are gone, yankee people or not.
and to tomc, if the best you can say in response to me is keep shining my shoes, then I rest my case. You just keep sticking to the '70's to bolster an argument...it still wont change the fact that your team has lost multiple AFC title games at home in the last 12 or so yrs.

But something tells me you have already done that, and are aware of all those stats and the outcome of the study, so I need not go on any further....like Tomc, get out of the '70's, and get into this decade....and jesus christ please dont ever ever again use the pirates as evidence to bolster your argument...YOU SHOULD BE BANNED FROM FURTHER POSTING JUST BASED ON MENTIONING THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM THAT WOULD INDICATE THEY MIGHT BE VIABLE.... they are the biggest joke in baseball....done with you now, come back for the next topic, but better prepared.

What makes the "decade" the standard, dta? Where's history become relevant? Start with the history of the Patriots franchise...1960...and compare the two from there. Comes down to 6>3. Yup...Steelers lost 4 at home under Cowher. Still got 6. Patsies narrowed the gap to 4>3, but we've got twice as much as you again.

Same standard with the Penguins....since Pens came into the league in '67.....it's Pens, 3 cups, Bruins 2.

Point with the Pirates is this...as abysmal as the past two decades has been...their history as a championship franchise still beats that of the sawks.

What about Beli when he loses the Big One though, DTA...great social skills that guy has.

Funny how it was your greatest quarterback, who said that Plaxico's SB prediction of the Patsies putting 17 on the board was way low...and the couldn't even get that done. Any rate, your "best coach" has gone home without the ring 3 playoff years in a row now, and last year didn't even make the tournament. Brady...best QB ever? Keep believing that while he's gimping around Foxboro this year, compliments of Bernard Pollard. You want a BP Fan Club T, Howdy? I DO have an extra.

You've obviously never been to Pittsburgh nor know its status as the birthplace of so many technological and medical improvements. I live ride up the road from you likely, across the NH border, so I see both worlds. I'll take the City of Champions any day....Pittsburgh, that is.

In all serious, let's look at this Team of the Decade question, though in all seriousness, again, I think it's irrelevant. I had this debate though with the hosts of a local show up here in Nashua, NH.

If neither Pats or Steelers win in this year, then Pats are Team of Decade, given the very simple tenant of 3>2.

Should the Steelers win though, and it was put ot a vote, Steelers would come out on top due to the reality of one's recent memory being the strongetst.

Most recent memory of Steelers would be 2 SBs in a row to close the decade and 3 in the decades 2nd half, wheras most recent memories of the Pats would be one of the biggetst choke-jobs in NFL history in SB XLII, preceded by blowing a 21-3 lead in the AFCCG, preceded by losing to a Denver team who the Pittsburgh Steelers blew out the following week, on their home turf.

And please, spare me this 16-0 baloney. Most reasoned Pats fans I know (all 3 of 'em), want to put as much distance between 16-0 and themselves as they can. Why? Because they remain haunted by a season in which they were 18-0, heavey SB favorites, then lost in as compelling a fashion as the this year's Pittsburgh Steeler victory.

Any rate....right now, Pats could claim Team of Decade mantle. But really...anyone care??
